How many think marrage is relavent anymore? If till death do we part, sickness and health, better or worse parts are omited or replaced with only as long as it is what we want and dont have to give up what we dont? ~ Michael Hansen

Marriage is a social union or legal contract BETWEEN PEOPLE that creates kinship. It is an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually intimate and sexual, are acknowledged in a variety of ways, depending on the culture or subculture in which it is found. Such a union, often formalized via a wedding ceremony, may also be called matrimony.

People marry for many reasons, including one or more of the following: legal, social, emotional, economical, spiritual, and religious. These might include arranged marriages, family obligations, the legal establishment of a nuclear family unit, the legal protection of children and public declaration of commitment.

Marriage practices are very diverse across cultures, yet almost every known society has had some form of marriage between a man and a woman. In some societies an individual is limited to being in one such couple at a time (monogamy), while other cultures allow a male to have more than one wife (polygamy) or, less commonly, a female to have more than one husband (polyandry).

Some societies also allow marriage between two males or two females. Societies frequently have other restrictions on marriage based on the ages of the participants, preexisting kinship, and membership in religious or other social groups.

The act of marriage usually creates normative or legal obligations between the individuals involved. In some societies these obligations also extend to certain family members of the married persons.

ALMOST ALL CULTURES THAT RECOGNIZE MARRIAGE ALSO RECOGNIZE ADULTERY AS A VIOLATION OF THE TERMS OF MARRIAGE, AND FORBID INCESTUOUS MARRIAGES.

In cultures that allow the dissolution of a marriage this is known as divorce.
Marriage is usually recognized by the state, a religious authority, or both. It is often viewed as a contract. Civil marriage is the legal concept of marriage as a governmental institution irrespective of religious affiliation, in accordance with marriage laws of the jurisdiction. If recognized by the state, by the religion(s) to which the parties belong or by society in general, the act of marriage changes the personal and social status of the individuals who enter into it. 1. As you so aptly stated sis...Marriage is both sanctimonius and sacred before the MOST HIGH.
Marriage in fact I would dare say...is ONE of our last remaining vestiges of hope...that God's word is indeed the law to which there is none higher. Holy matrimony remains to this day an institution by which the hearts of males and females are bonded. The convenant(an agreement, usually formal, between two or more persons to do or not do something specified) that is marriage indeed brings two couples closer to God's divine presence and can not and should not be discounted. We can flippantly boast or say, "Well it's just a piece of paper." but this is BLASPHEMOUS and should NEVER be uttered from one's mouth if they RESPECT and HONOR...THE MOST HIGH God. Amen???

  2. I am one of those "it's just a piece of paper" people. I believe that LEGAL marriage and SPIRITUAL marriage are separate!!!! I am a widow that is "married by love and spirit" to a widower!! We have a beautiful 1 yr old daughter that has her father's last name. We have been living as married and we refer to each other as our spouses. We are both wearing rings that signify a commitment. We have not legally married due to finances. I know that eventually we will make it legal, but until then we are still MARRIED to death due us part!!!

  3. Mombare,

What part of the world do you live in? In America, you can legally marry in almost every state for less than $100

  4. THE "PIECE OF PAPER" SYNDROME FALLS INTO THE CATAGORY OF THE MANY "LABELS" WE ARE EXPOSED TO IN SOCIETY. JUST LIKE RACE & RELEGION ALL A LABEL. 2 PEOPLE CAN BE TOGETHER FOR LIFE THROUGH THEIR OWN COMMITTMENT AND NOT SIGN A DOCUMENT TO DO SO. THE NATURAL THING FOR 2 PEOPLE TO DO WHO KNOW THAT IN THIS LIFE MAN WAS MADE FOR WOMAN AND VICE A VERSA, NATURALLY THEY WILL WANT TO STAY TOGETHER FOREVER. I JUST DON'T GET CAUGHT UP IN ANY OF THE LABELS THAT SOCEITY IMPOSES... SORT OF A FREE SPIRIT SO TO SAY!

  5. I think Marriage is still a sacred union and believe that it's the best relationship that God intended for us to have. However, we as a people taint our marriages. We don't honor each other in ways that people can see how beautiful it can be. Those who are unmarried look at some of the marriages around them and say - why? Throwing in the towel has become a quick way out. I love to see older people who have stuck to their "deal", and can still say they love each other after 60 years of marriage; and smile.

  6. Go spend a day in divorce court and you will see what marriage is all about today. Money and property. A successful man has nothing to gain from marriage.
